She’s just a girl from Tasmania, but HRH Princess Mary of Denmark has firmly cemented her status as one of the world’s most influential women
HER Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary is one of the world’s most stylish and influential women, and this month the former Mary Donaldson of Tasmania welcomed Vogue Australia back into her Copenhagen home, 12 years after her “world exclusive interview and cover shoot” in 2004.
As a fellow Tasmanian, I’m immensely proud.
Mary’s story is a modern-day fairy tale. Marketing executive meets a tall, dark stranger at a Sydney pub on the opening night of the 2000 Sydney Olympics — who just happens to be a prince. But the transformation of “Mary from Tassie” into one of the most recognisable and stylish women in the world today took a global village. There were beauty tricks, secret buying trips, language classes and even lessons in how to accept a bouquet or curtsy to her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe.
Every step of their four-year, long-distance courtship — and now 12 years of her marriage to Crown Prince Frederik — has seen the former Mary Donaldson emerge every inch a royal, in one of the most extraordinary makeovers in history.
“I always find it difficult to speak of myself as a role model, you know, because I think it is other people and their impression of you that makes a role model … it’s not something I consciously think about,” she told Vogue Australia editor-in-chief Edwina McCann.
“But at the same time, I am very aware of my role and my responsibility. If I can inspire others and if others see something in me that can inspire them or motivate them, then that’s a big compliment.”
Princess Mary and Prince Frederik and their four children — Prince Christian, 10, Princess Isabella, nine, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, five — were photographed in and around their home at Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, by the legendary Mario Testino. His images capture the thoroughly modern royal family in a relaxed atmosphere and convey a genuine love, warmth and elegance.
McCann also spoke to Princess Mary about her charities, passions and philanthropic causes, including the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, Women Deliver and the Mary Foundation.
“I have enormous admiration for both HRH Crown Prince Frederick and HRH Crown Princess Mary and the work they do,” McCann said. “The Crown Princess is making her mark as a world leader and is a passionate advocate in these areas. With her energy and drive I suspect this is still only the beginning of the enormous contribution she will make.”
I look forward to seeing her continue to grow and to one day become Queen.
