Take a walk on the wild side: What to pack for Bali

WHAT EVERY WOMAN NEEDS: What to pack for a Bali capsule wardrobe

TROPICAL climates call for clothes that are lightweight and fuss-free. Pieces you just pull on and go but also work together.

Ideally, you need a travel capsule wardrobe. Shorts, tops and simple little dresses. Nothing that clings and feels tight on the body. In fabrics that breathe and just hang off you. Think linen, cotton, silk and rayon.

I’m feeling suitably rested and recharged after a brief break in Bali. I love the heat and I love the tropics!

Every day of the year in Bali – or anywhere in the tropics really – the average temperature sits around 32 degrees and the overnight minimum is about 21! Even in the wet season. Having lived in the tropics on two previous occasions (Hong Kong from 1992-94 and Singapore from 2006-2009), one big plus is that you don’t have to think about what to wear each day. Because it’s virtually the same temperature every day of the year.

Hot and steamy temperatures also require a lot less of everything as well … less clothing, less food, and less activity. Unfortunately, that also means that some people forfeit any semblance of style and decorum in the heat. (In Bali, that means Bintang singlets, braided hair, and temporary tattoos!!!)

WHAT TO PACK FOR BALI

My Bali capsule travel wardrobe consisted of a pair of black walk shorts and capri pants (which I travelled in – it’s always cold in the cabin), ’50s-style white linen tap shorts, a pair of old denim cut-offs, and a denim skirt.

I also included grey marle and black T-shirts, a couple of white linen tops, a black cotton dress, and a white linen dress. Throw in three pairs of sandals and you have the perfect summer travel wardrobe. If you’re not sure what to pack for a capsule travel wardrobe then read here.

But it wasn’t just the weather pushing up the mercury!

This Zimmermann silk leopard print tunic turned up the heat factor. A great highlight piece to work back with my classic black and white pieces, it was the perfect throw-it-on-and-you’re-out-the-door-kinda dress. Over a swimsuit, shorts, or capri pants or dressed up with a belt, embellished sandals, and earrings for dinner or down with slides as I did here in Bali.

This simple little tunic is certain to take you for a walk on the wild side. Just what every woman needs!
